Pozzo is the story of a man who quite literally has to claw his way into existence, emerging from a cardboard box to take his place in a surreal world populated with drag queens and angel boys, a guardian bunny and a tutu-wearing poodle. Naked and newly formed, the godlike Pozzo is a blank canvas ready to be painted by whatever experiences he encounters.
So he goes about collecting experiences—wild, fantastical experiences. Working on a tugboat, becoming a disco dancer, being mistaken for an island god—all of these diversions lead him down knotted paths of self-discovery, paths that are illuminating, both for himself and for every colorful character he comes in contact with.
Like all good fantasies, Pozzo pushes beyond what is real to reveal what is true. Told, variously, in Shakespearean English, a Brooklyn accent, and song lyrics, it’s a rollicking saga that explores the absurdities—and the commonalities—that come with being human.

Pizza stands in a class by itself. With many references to our American culture and modern man's philosophical dilemma (one might say "self-induced dilemma, to borrow a shade of the book's method of referencing, if not the author's opinion), the narrative constantly surprises and delights. I've never read anything so inventive. A reader of philosophy will catch far more inside jokes than I did, it even the glimmers are intriguing. All the lyrics of pop songs dropped in at inopportune the (or inopportune) momentsgive a nod to the absurdity of movie sound tracks, and remind me of the musical accompaniment. In my life, whether it be song fragments rattling through my brain or the radio switched on in my car. Fun, wise and deep. A book to return to, again and again.

Pozzo Sophia Johnson Books Reviews
A picaresque romp through modern thought reminiscent of Nathanael West’s The Dream Life of Balso Snell. I especially liked the use of lyrics from the Great American Songbook. Rife with literary allusions, the plot sends Pozzo on to his logical demise. I enjoyed this book for its humor, language, and quixotic quest.
Pozzo is an amazing, delightful, poignant and absorbing work. You have to keep reading because you can’t imagine what’s coming next. The characters are profoundly funny, but
always deeply engaging. While much of the novel is laugh out loud funny, it is also moving and asks big questions in unexpected, wonderfully entertaining ways. Pozzo is full of characters you’ll love and questions you’ll never look at in the same way again. A must read.
Fantastic - in every sense of the word! Pozzo is a beautiful, poignant, touching and hilarious novel. Questions of identity are brilliantly conveyed through characters who are unique and captivating. Plus it's a real page-turner! I'm no romantic, but his is one unique love story I highly recommend and will be reading more than once.
As I have told friends about this book The Allegory of the Cave, with the dark humor of Naked Lunch, sprinkle some Alice in Wonderland meets Priscilla Queen of the Desert and you have Pozzo.
It captivated me, and one of the very few books I couldn't put down.
I am looking forward to many more books by the The Scribe Sophia Johnson
This story moves through myriad surprises, twists and turns, at once hilarious and tragic, through the strange and lovable character of Pozzo, a man who cannot say anything without saying everything.
It is a freewheeling flight of imagination and social commentary, with almost cardboard cut out characters who nevertheless manage to become touchingly human. This is the product of a rich and uncensored mind, steeped in philosophy and ultimately, a kind of helpless and ironic humanity.
The only thing wrong with this book is that it ends. I could have read on for weeks. Funny, lyrical, poignant, whimsical and so much more. I can't wait to reread it, which I will do more than once, each time discovering hidden gems I missed in previous reads. Strap on your seatbelt before you open it, and be braced for a carnival ride while on acid with virtual unreality goggles glued to your face!
