After the siege of Boston forced the British to evacuate that city in March 1776, Continental Army commander George Washington suspected that the British would move by sea to New York City, the next logical target in an attempt to end a colonial insurrection. He thus rushed his army south to defend the city. Washington guessed correctly, but it would be to no avail. Unlike Boston, New York City's terrain featured few defensible positions. The city lacked a high point from which to launch a siege, as the peninsula of Boston was fortunate to have. Moreover, Washington wasn't sure defending the city was necessary, hoping that an expedition launched toward Quebec like the one Benedict Arnold had led in late 1775 would keep the British away from New York anyway. However, Congress thought otherwise, and demanded that Washington defend New York. Washington thus did what he was told, and it nearly resulted in the army's demise.

The Culper Ring: The History and Legacy of the Revolutionary War's Most Famous Spy Ring describes a little-known component of the Revolutionary war. Other than Nathan Hale, I had read nothing about American spies during the Revolutionary war until I read this book. It was interesting to read about a group of people who became spies well before they knew whether the colonists or Great Britain would win the war. Also the book explained the difficulty of the spies being able to relay the information in a timely fashion without great risk to themselves. The book was a quick and interesting read, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the Revolutionary war.Product details

The Culper Ring The History and Legacy of the Revolutionary War Most Famous Spy Ring (Audible Audio Edition) Charles River Editors Colin Fluxman Books Reviews
This is a good historical piece that covers some details of the Revolutionary War period not commonly covered in history books. While we certainly know the outcome of the struggles with the British today, the revolution's outcome was anything but a foregone conclusion at that time. The clandestine gathering of intelligence and the impact of applying said information is nicely documented in this book.
Intriguing insight into a side of our country's early government activities with which I am totally unfamiliar. Would suggest it as a quick afternoon or evening read.
We've started watching the TV series "Turn" and I wanted to bone up on the history. It was a good book for that. It gives an overview of the Culper Ring without wading into the details. If you just want that level of understanding, it's very good. If you want deeper details and more meat on the bone, this book can still be a place to start your research.
I love history and this book has insight to the spies of the revolutionary war. I had watched Turn, the tv drama about Culper and wanted to know more about the real story behind the show. This book was very informative on that level.
Truthfully, the information provided within is a good summary of information from other sources. Unfortunately, the way the information is provided is so disjointed and "all over the place" that it is hard to follow. The sentence structure and extreme lack of editorial proofreading also make it hard to follow the information. I wish I had not purchased this particular pamphlet. I would not recommend this particular writing to anyone of scholarly pursuit, but would recommend it as a decent place to gather information for more valuable reading sources.
Only recently has it become known that men and woman spies played important roles in providing vital military information to George Washington. In all probability 450 or more individuals contributed information. The British acknowledged that they were better at spying than they. This book provides a very good overview of the culpers..a mixture of patriotic men and women who were successful not stopping British counterfeiting operations with the object of making our money worthless
Other successes are described in book. Still there is more to be learned and certainly the identity of agent 355.
who most certainly was not Anna strong. A good possibility is Elizabeth Denton.
I do believe that historically there are too many people who played an important role in the war for the States for all to have books written about them.I was pleased to read this account of people who were willing to step up to the plate, and do all they could to establish this wonderful country where citizens can be free to become the best by the choices they make. These brave, ordinary people stepped into danger time after time. They helped to lay the foundations of this nation, therefore, their actions should be lauded. This was an interesting book. Thanks to those who had a part in its creation and publishing.
